FSO POLONEZ 2000 RALLY

This is a Polish rally car built by OBRSO and based on the FSO Polonez. In 1979, it became a Group 4 competitor (and thus could be automatically transferred into Group B). In 1980, the car also saw action in Group 2. In 1984, the Polonez 2000 was converted to the less strict Group B rules. However, there is no records of the Group B Polonez ever competing in the WRC itself. Instead, it saw action in national rallies in Eastern Europe and more predominantly in its home country of Poland where it competed up to 1990. Afterwards, it was unofficially reported that all of the competition cars were dismantled and sold for parts, making the Group B FSO Polonez 2000 available only through replicas.

FSO/OBRSO reportedly tried turbocharged 3-door rally versions of the Polonez 2000, sometimes paired with superchargers for better low-end torque, but these cars never received homologation. There also exists a unique mid-engined variant, called the “StratoPolonez”, that uses the V6 from a crashed Lancia Stratos. It boasted around 285 HP, very wide rear fender flares, and was reportedly very difficult to drive due to poor aerodynamics. This might have proven to be a better (more suited) Group B iteration than the 2000 Rally…

FSO POLONEZ 2000

Fabryka Samochodów Osobowych (FSO) started production of the Polonez in 1978 as a rebodied Polski Fiat 125p. The 2000 variant was very rare due to the scarcity of the Fiat 2.0L DOHC engine in Eastern Europe. It was mainly sold to government officials and for rally usage.
