Ferrari 308 GTB + Production Version

FERRARI 308 GTB IN RALLY TRIM

Conceived in 1975, the Ferrari 308 was not built for rallying in mind, nor was it produced for homologation purposes. However, some privateers thought that the car would perform well in tarmac rallies so the car received Group 4 homologation. This sparked the idea to have purpose-built 308 rally cars. Long time Ferrari partner Michelotto took on the task. They built 11 cars under the Group 4 specifications, and for 1983 they made 4 more units specifically for Group B. Sadly, the older spec’d cars turned out to be more reliable.

Like the BMW M1, the 308 GTB was expensive to race, and it only appeared in 3 WRC events. However, the car managed some success in national events, mainly in Italian tarmac rallies. Ferrari would later conceive the 288 GTO (based on the 308) which was specifically intended for Group B homologation and road racing.

HOMOLOGATION / PRODUCTION VERSION

FERRARI 308 GTB

As noted before, the 308 GTB was not a specific Group B homologation car as all Group 4 cars could automatically be transferred into Group B. Styled by renowned design firm Pininfarina, the 308 came in many versions and specifications over its 11 year production run. It was the basis for the incredible 288 GTO homologation version, which was sadly never raced.

For the following specifications, I will be using the latter highest spec’d of the 308: the European Quattrovalvole (QV) version.
