Charade Turbo 926
DAIHATSU CHARADE 926 TURBO

The car participated in only 3 WRC rallies during the Group B era; they were two local entries in the 1985 New Zealand rally, and one in the 1985 & 86 Finland rallies. It competed in the B-9 class for under 1299cc or less engines. As such, there is little known about the true specifications of the rally cars themselves. Daihatsu was planning the even more powerful mid-engine 926R for Group B competition.

HOMOLOGATION VERSION

926T

Nuove Innocenti was a well established Italian car maker who was taken over by British Leyland in 1972. It only lasted a year under Leyland until it was taken over again, this time by De Tomaso. In 1982, De Tomaso looked around for a new supplier and eventually found the G11 Daihatsu Charade chassis and engines, including the CB60 SOHC 3 cylinder turbo motor. This made an unlikely but excellent combination of Japanese technical know-how with Italian “hot hatch” style.

The De Tomaso Turbo was based on a regular Charade Turbo but with exterior and interior changes to make it similar in appearance to the Innocenti Turbo. Most likely first thought of as a publicity stunt, Daihatsu took full advantage of Japanese enthusiasm for imported products, especially from Italy, which was in effervescence at the time. Only 200 of the 926 Turbos were produced in October of 1984 specifically for Group B Rally homologation. The cars had slightly decreased engine capacity from 993 cc to 926 cc to fit in with sub 1300cc regulations (with the 1.4 multiplication factor imposed on all forced induction engines in Group B).
